Introducing Antonio Gismondi
Each and every bottle in our virtual bottle shop is a reflection of a particular time and place but perhaps most importantly it’s the life’s work of a passionate winemaker – and that’s something that really matters to us. So every once in a while we’d like to take a moment to introduce you to some of the inspiring people we’re working with.
One of the latest additions to our portfolio of winemakers is Antonio Gismondi – and we’re completely blown away by his fresh and breezy natural wines!
Antonio is the oldest son from a 10th generation wine growing family with 3 hectares of vineyards situated in Cerreto Sannita in Benevento in Campania, a couple of hours drive up in the hills from Napoli.
For the past generation mama Maria and papa Pascuale have been cultivating the land in the old fashioned way, worked by hand, without use of herbicides or pesticides, and selling their grapes to the local cooperative as many other wine growers in the region have traditionally been doing.
The Gismondi family’s vineyards are situated in about 350 meters altitude and are facing South and South-West overlooking the beautiful Titerno valley. The vineyards are around 30 years old and are planted with Malvasia di Candia, Falanghina, Sangiovese, Merlot and little bit of the rare grey variety Trebbianno Rossa. The underground is predominantly made up of limestone and clay and is generally quite rocky.
The funny thing is that Antonio didn’t have his mind set on making wine when he was young. Instead he moved to Catalonia and started up a pizzeria in Barcelona. It was only after getting acquainted with Massimo and Antonella from Partida Creus that he got convinced to move back to his home town to make natural wines from the family’s vineyards.
His first commercial vintage was 2019 and we’re extremely proud to be onboard from the very beginning of Antonio’s exciting journey and look so much forward to receiving his 2020 vintage that is being bottled as we speak.
