Zou Maï 2021 is a wild and herby Cinsault with a light and fluid body and a spicy tannic bite from the hands of John Almansa, a true idealist with a heart of gold and a head full of crazy ideas. This wine is made from the old rustic variety Cinsault that goes through a short semi-carbonic maceration in whole bunches before being pressed and aged on neutral glass fiber tanks. This cellar technique makes exactly the type of wine we love from Southern France, a red that’s free-spirited and easy-drinking, bright in colour and lush in fruit.
John Almansa came out as a natural winemaker in 2015 after having made a turn from keeping bees and making olive oil in Languedoc and created Domaine Zou Maï, which translates to “Come on!”. Today he cultivates 3 hectares in Congénies in Gard and recently planted another 2 hectares in Hérault, in a forested area with a bit of altitude. Something that was much needed after the record breaking hot vintage 2018 in order to bring acidity and freshness into the wines.
Back when John was searching for his first vineyards in Gard he specifically went for grape varieties that were edible, something that explains a great deal about his style of winemaking.
John is an idealist with a heart of gold and a head full of ideas who wants to make wines that taste good and are easy to drink, and boy, are they easy-drinking!
